Late Showa Era - Tokyo - Hand-dyed & Embroidered Silk

THE MEANING

The botan - peony - represents prosperity, honour and good fortune. Known as the "king of flowers" in Japanese culture, it is associated with abundance and a life well-lived. A gift for a milestone birthday, Mother's Day or any occasion that deserves something considered.

THE CRAFT

Two techniques on one garment. The ground fabric is shibori - each dot on the charcoal silk individually tied and dyed by hand, creating a fine textural surface across the whole piece. At the hem and sleeves, a separate panel of hand embroidery in pink, blush and soft green sits against a black scrollwork background. Shibori and embroidery are both time-intensive techniques - combining them on one piece is unusual.
