Era

late Showa period

Symbolism

The intricate dotted pattern called 'shobiri' is created through resist dyeing, forms a soft geometric patttern across the garment. This repetition evokes ideas of patience, precision, and quiet resilience — a reflection of the time-intensive process behind it. The flowing, almost landscape-like movement in the lower half suggests natural elements — shifting earth, fields, or drifting forms — symbolising change, grounding, and continuity.

Textile / technique

Crafted using shibori, a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique where the fabric is meticulously bound, folded, or stitched before dyeing. This piece features a fine, all-over shibori pattern, requiring exceptional skill and time to achieve such uniformity. The result is a richly textured surface with depth and movement, enhanced by the warm golden-yellow tones and subtle tonal variations. Shibori is considered very special in Japan.

Styling
Wear open over denim and a simple tank for an elevated everyday look, or pair with tailored trousers and silk for something more refined. The soft structure allows it to drape beautifully, while the colour adds warmth and quiet impact. For a more defined silhouette, cinch with a belt to transform it into a wrap-style jacket. A piece that moves seamlessly between casual and considered — designed to be worn your own way. The jacket would fit size 6-16 UK/AUS.
