Showa Era - Nagano - Silk

THE MEANING

Momiji — maple leaf — represents the beauty of transition and the Japanese concept of mono no aware: the quiet appreciation of things that do not last. Sourced in Nagano (where our family is from and we spend many happy holidays) - it is Japan's most celebrated autumn region, where the maple season draws visitors from across the country every year.

Open the lining and a second layer of meaning appears — pink cranes (tsuru), the symbol of longevity, good fortune and peace. Two symbols in one garment.

FABRIC & DETAILS

- 100% vintage silk - Scattered momiji (maple leaf) pattern in muted pinks, greens and orange on a warm gold ground

- Fully lined in silk - pink crane (tsuru) pattern

- Can be worn reversible - the lining as the outside

- Medium weight, slightly structured

- Sourced in Nagano

FIT

One size. Fits Australian sizes 6-16. Worn open and relaxed.

HOW TO WEAR IT

- Over a white tee and jeans - the gold ground works as a neutral

- Belted with a contrasting colour - a green or rust obi belt works particularly well

- Reversed with the crane lining as the outside - an entirely different garment

- An autumn and winter piece - the colour palette is made for the season

- A gift for someone embracing a new chapter or navigating change
