Late Showa Era - 1970s - Silk - Reversible
THE MEANING
The koshi (check/grid) pattern on the exterior represents balance and order - one of Japan's most enduring geometric motifs. The lining carries a shokko grid — a formal geometric pattern used in Japanese court textiles for centuries — with kiku (chrysanthemum) at the centre of each frame. The kiku represents longevity, rejuvenation and the dignity of a life well-lived. Two layers of meaning, one on each side.
THE LINING
Turn this haori inside out and a completely different garment appears - a pale cream and sage green jacquard with large geometric floral motifs in square frames. The craftsmanship of the lining is as considered as the exterior. Worn reversed, it reads as a soft, understated piece. Worn exterior-side out, it is graphic and bold. Two haori in one.
