Showa Era - Nagano - Woven Silk
THE MEANING
The mikoshi - portable shrine - is carried through the streets during Japanese festivals to bring good fortune and celebrate community. Hidden inside a quiet pink exterior, this lining is a private burst of celebration known only to the person wearing it.
THE LINING
Open the jacket and a festival scene appears - joyful figures carrying a mikoshi in orange and gold on a cream silk ground. The outside gives nothing away. The inside is entirely unexpected. This is a haori for someone who keeps the best things close.
