Late Showa Era - Nagoya - Hand-dyed Silk

THE MEANING

The kiku - chrysanthemum - represents longevity, renewal and the dignity of a life well-lived. Associated with the Japanese Imperial family for centuries. A gift for a milestone birthday, a wedding, or any occasion that deserves something considered.

THE CRAFT

Shibori is a Japanese resist-dyeing technique where fabric is hand-tied and bound before dyeing.  Ombre shibori requires the artisan to control the depth of colour across the entire length of the fabric simultaneously — the hem absorbs the most dye, the shoulders the least. The gradient is achieved through timing and movement alone, with no mechanical assistance. It is one of the more demanding applications of the shibori technique.
