Showa Era - 1960s-1970s - Unisex - Hand-painted Silk
THE MEANING
The lining appears to carries the character for Double Happiness (囍) — the most recognised symbol of marriage and union in East Asian culture. Two identical characters joined together, representing two people becoming one. Hidden inside a quiet brown marbled exterior, it reveals itself only when the jacket is worn. A gift with meaning built into the fabric.
OVERVIEW
The outer fabric features hand-painted ink-wash figures in the style of ukiyo-e - travellers and merchants going about their day, rendered in muted greys and browns against a marbled silk ground. The lining is a deep contrasting brown silk with the kotobuki character printed across it. Men's haori traditionally featured narrative lining scenes - this is a fine example of that tradition.
